Small Stewart Wool Scarf

Stewart began as an occupational name, taken from the office of steward. The family’s roots reach back to Brittany, where its forebears were hereditary stewards of Dol, and a knight named Alan settled in Oswestry in Shropshire. Walter fitz Alan, of that family, came to Scotland and was made High Steward by David I, and from that office a surname and, in time, a royal house took shape. The Stewart Black is the quieter counterpart of the Royal Stewart tartan, setting its pattern on a deep black ground in place of red.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. Muted green and blue lines run through the black ground, with fine touches of red giving the check a hidden warmth. The mood is composed and elegant, and it pairs easily with a white shirt, soft grey knitwear or dark tailoring.

Twenty-nine careful stages bring each scarf to its final form, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a velvety, weightless finish.
