Small Smith Wool Scarf

Few names are as old or as widely carried as Smith. It comes from the metalworking trades, and one of its earliest records is an Ecceard Smith in the Annals of Durham in 975. In the Highlands it became Gow, from the Gaelic for smith, and the Smiths of Clan Chattan were known as Sliochd an Gobh Cruim, “the race of the crooked smith”. Among those who carried the name were the philosopher and economist Adam Smith and George Smith, who founded The Glenlivet distillery in 1824. The Smith tartan reflects that craft heritage in deep tones of navy, green and black, brightened by fine lines of red and yellow.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. Navy and green meet in a close, steady check, as rich as the shadows of a forge, with fine red and yellow lines glowing like embers. It pairs easily with a rust-coloured knit, stone chinos or a white tee.

Twenty-nine careful stages bring each scarf to completion, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a soft, billowing finish. The result is a scarf of understated luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
