Description
Lamont is a name with an old and distinctive root. It comes from the Old Norse for “lawspeaker”, the person who held and recited the law, and it entered the written record in 1235, when Sir Laumon signed a charter granting lands to Paisley Abbey. The clan is centred on Cowal, the peninsula of Argyll between its sea lochs, where Toward Castle stood as its historic seat. Its motto, “Ne Parcas nec Spernas”, means “Neither spare nor spurn”, and its crest is an open hand. The Lamont tartan is close kin to the Campbell, differing in its fine white lines, and a sample from around 1816 in the Highland Society of London carries the seal and signature of the chief.
This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. Deep blues and greens meet in an even check crossed by fine white lines, tones that recall the hills and sea water of Cowal. The pattern is crisp without being busy, and it sits easily beside stone-coloured trousers, a white shirt or a dark overcoat.
Twenty-nine careful stages of finishing complete each piece, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a soft, airy finish. The result is a scarf of understated luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
