Black and Red Check Wool Scarf

We handcraft this scarf from extra fine pure lambswool at a Scottish mill with more than two and a half centuries of cloth-making behind it. Every line of the iconic check is placed with precision, and the colour holds steady from one fringed end to the other. Let it hang loose over a navy coat, tuck it into the neckline of a leather jacket, or tie it casually over a crisp white shirt on the way to dinner. It has generous length for wrapping and folds small enough for an overnight bag.

Every scarf travels through 29 steps, beginning with dyeing and weaving and ending with washing and finishing. The closing flourish is a hand-brushing with teasels, the prickly dried seed heads mills have used for generations, which lifts the fibres into a plush, gentle finish. It is wonderfully soft on the skin and made to be worn for years, then handed on.
