Description

Royal Stewart is the best known of all the tartans linked to the royal House of Stewart, a name that comes from the hereditary office of High Steward of Scotland, first held by Walter fitz Alan around 1150. Robert II became king in 1371, and nine Stewart monarchs ruled Scotland until 1603, when James VI also took the crowns of England and Ireland. The sett was first published in 1831 in James Logan’s The Scottish Gaël, and it is now the personal tartan of the British monarch. Although it carries royal associations, it has become a universal tartan, worn by pipers and admirers around the world.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. A vivid red ground is crossed by bands of blue, green, yellow, black and white, and the check holds its bright colours in lively, well-ordered balance. It gives plain black knitwear, a grey blazer or a classic trench a confident burst of colour.

Twenty-nine unhurried steps lead to the finished scarf, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which raise the fibres into a soft, billowing finish. The result is a scarf of effortless luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
