Description

Menzies, pronounced “Ming-iss”, is one of the most distinctive names of Highland Perthshire. Its story begins at the court of Alexander II, where Sir Robert de Myneris became chamberlain in 1249 and received lands in Glen Lyon and Atholl. The clan’s historic seat, Castle Menzies, also known as the Palace of Weem, stands near Aberfeldy and was held by the family for over 500 years, and in 1510 James IV erected the Menzies lands into a free barony. The clan’s motto means “God willing I shall”, and its war cry, “Up with the White and Red”, is still reflected in the colours of its tartan. A Menzies sett was certified by the chief in around 1816 for the Highland Society of London.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. It is reversible, so it can be worn with either face showing, and a deep black ground is lit by fine lines of red and white that give the check a crisp, graphic clarity. It pairs easily with a rust knit, stone trousers or a pale blue shirt.

Twenty-nine meticulous stages bring each scarf to completion, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a feather-soft finish. The result is a scarf of understated luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
