Mackellar Wool Scarf

Mackellar is a name of Argyll. It comes from the Gaelic MacEalair, “son of Ealair”, an old Gaelic form of Hilary that traces back to the Latin for cheerful, and it took root along the shores of Loch Fyne. From those western lochs and hills the family name travelled across Scotland, carried alongside a tartan that has long stood for belonging to a place and a people. The Mackellar tartan is rendered here in a soft light pink, a gentle reading of a Highland pattern.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine wool in a Scottish mill more than 250 years old. The light pink glows like the first colour of a winter dawn, and the tartan lies across the cloth in a fine, even check, subtle enough to feel timeless and distinct enough to be remembered. It brings a touch of warmth to charcoal tweed, navy tailoring or a camel coat.

Twenty-nine stages of finishing shape each piece, and the last is the most traditional: the wool is brushed by hand with teasels, which coax the fibres into a cloud-like softness. The result is a scarf that feels light in the hand and wraps the neck in lasting warmth, its fringed ends adding a finishing flourish, made to become a treasured companion for many winters.
