Small Baird Wool Scarf

Baird is a name that stretches back into the earliest Scottish records. Henry de Barde witnessed a charter of Stirling lands in 1178, and by the 14th century the Baird family had spread across Lanarkshire, Aberdeenshire and beyond. The chiefly line took root at Auchmedden on the north coast of Aberdeenshire, where a castle built in 1539 served as the clan’s seat for over two centuries. The clan’s motto, “Dominus Fecit”, means “The Lord made”, its crest is a gryphon’s head, and among its best-known members is John Logie Baird, the inventor of television. The Baird tartan was recorded in 1880 and it is a refined design of blues and greens, set apart by a bright stripe of purple, originally red.

This scarf is crafted from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a Scottish mill with 250 years of heritage. Cool blues and deep greens meet in a balanced check, with fine black lines and a flash of purple giving the pattern its distinctive spark. It brings quiet character to pale grey knitwear, a white tee or a dark overshirt.

Twenty-nine measured stages bring each scarf to completion, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which raise the fibres into a soft, feather-light finish. The result is a scarf of understated luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
