This solid black scarf from Edinburgh Cashmere, a Scottish heritage brand, is made from pure extra fine cashmere and finished in a deep, even black that sharpens whatever it is worn with. Against tailoring it adds definition, over knitwear it adds contrast, and beside colour it lets the rest of the outfit speak.

Woven in the tradition of a mill with more than 250 years of history, the cloth is smooth and supple, its colour dense and even from end to end, its fringe neat and clean. Wear it knotted loosely, draped long or tucked close beneath a coat; in black, it settles into an outfit rather than competing with it.

Each scarf passes through 35 stages of making, from dyeing and weaving to washing and finishing, and is completed by hand with teasels, a traditional brushing that raises the fibres to a soft, light finish. It is a black scarf to wear often, and to keep.
