Buchanan is a name tied to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. The clan held lands on the loch’s eastern shore in Stirlingshire, and its documented record begins in 1225, when the Earl of Lennox granted the island of Clairinch to the family, followed by a charter to Gilbert de Buchanan in 1231. The clan’s motto, “Clarior hinc honos”, means “The brighter hence the honour”. The earliest known Buchanan tartan appears in the Wilsons of Bannockburn “Fancy Patterns” of around 1800, on a ground of yellow, red and green, and a cloak woven from it from the same years is now held by the National Museum of Scotland. The tartan today is an asymmetric pattern, recorded in 1850, and it remains one of the most distinctive in Scotland.

This scarf is made in Scotland from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a mill with 250 years of heritage. Warm, earthy shades of yellow, red and green run through the check, with finer lines of blue, black and white adding depth, and the asymmetric design gives the cloth a lively, individual character. It adds a glow to a black roll-neck, dark denim or a tailored jacket.

Twenty-nine thoughtful stages bring each scarf to its final form, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a downy, weightless finish. The result is a scarf of understated luxury, light in the hand and gentle in warmth, its fringed ends adding a graceful finish, made to be worn on any occasion and treasured for years to come.
