Black Stewart Wool Scarf

Few families have shaped Scotland as the Stewarts have. Their line wore the crown from Robert II in 1371 and produced monarchs including Mary, Queen of Scots, and their name has been woven into Scottish life ever since. The Royal Stewart tartan burns with a bold red ground, while the Black Stewart is its more subtle counterpart, favoured for relaxed dress, setting the same family pattern on a deep black ground.

This scarf is made in Scotland from 100% pure extra fine lambswool in a mill with 250 years of heritage. Muted green and blue lines run through the black, with faint touches of red adding a quiet warmth, and the check has the calm, understated elegance of a pattern that doesn’t need to shout. It pairs easily with a stone-coloured jumper, white jeans or a striped tee.

Twenty-nine considered stages bring each scarf to completion, and the last is the most traditional: the lambswool is brushed by hand with teasels, which lift the fibres into a velvety, feather-light finish.
